DSCF6920aaThe Pinus heldreichii, also known as Pinus leucodermis, is typical of those habitats that have been chosen for protection by the EU program Natura 2000. This particular pine can be found only in the Balkans, and in Italy, more specifically only on the Calabrian-Lucanian Apennine, around the Pollino National Park area. The majority of specimens is concentrated on the mountains: Zaccano-La Spina group, Pollino, Palanuda-Cozzo del Pellegrino, Montea, and Mount Alps. It’s exactly because of this particular conspicuous presence in the area that the Pinus heldreichii was chosen as symbol of Pollino National Park.
